Sean Fore, Mayor                                         May 1, 2006

Dear Neighbor,

On March 29 our City had its 1st Blockwatch meeting, with over 30 neighbors attending.  Everyone agreed that the meeting was filled with lots of good information.

Blockwatch participation is very simple; we hope everyone will participate.  We still need captains for Bristol, Blowing Tree, Cardwell (2), and Hoke.  The next Blockwatch meeting is Tuesday, May 30, 6:30 at City Hall.

On the back page of this newsletter you’ll find a simple sign-up form.  Please fill it out and call 710-9470 for either Officer Danny Cook or myself to pick it up (or mail to address above).  This form will only be used for Blockwatch purposes.  Thanks for your continued support of this great program.  If you have questions or comments, don’t hesitate to call.

                        Chief Redman

Police Chief Redman reported on the following:

--From 3/10 to 4/13, there were a total of 380 coverage hours,

            --112 citizen contacts,

--9 traffic stops with 2 citations, and 1 traffic accident,

--2 reports of theft, 4 motorist assists, and 2 house watches,

--There are 2 ongoing investigations from outside agencies,

--Working on grants from Homeland Security & Traffic Safety,

--Block Watch program is going well, and information on the next meeting will be in the upcoming city newletter,

--New phone for the Police Department is now in.  The phone number is 710-9470,

--1 warrant is outstanding for Herman Harris,

--City police car now has 4,453 miles,

--Finally, the Hurstbourne Acres Police Department presented an award of achievement to resident Sandy Ashley.  On December 9, 2005, she provided pertinent information leading to the arrest of three dangerous persons who had assaulted one of our citizens.

Recent Storms

Mayor Fore had contacted LG&E with concerns about the length of time some residents of the city were without power as a result of the recent storms.  As of this date, there has been no response.  A representative from LG&E will be invited to next month’s meeting to discuss the service being provided.

Attorney’s Report

Attorney Emery reported on the meeting held with the property manager of Camden Apartments regarding the construction of the fence at the end of Hoke Road.  Permission still has not been granted.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Parks

Commissioner Dunn reported that the water fountain in the park has been turned off and will be removed as soon as possible.        ‘StumpBusters’ has recently cut the grass in the park along with removing some weeds in preparation for the upcoming Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday.

It was also noted that three quotes for the construction of the fence at the end of Hoke Road have now been obtained.

Sanitation

Commissioner Heck advised that the yard waste of a resident on Hurstbourne Circle was not being picked up.  Rumpke has been contacted four times, but so far without results.  The resident of 1804 Woodfield has requested one of the large dumpsters.  Commissioner Heck will contact Rumpke tomorrow.

Police

Mayor Fore commended Police Commissioner Hardin for his hard work and devotion to providing the best practical police service.  Commissioner Hardin mentioned that in addition to the two police officers working for Hurstbourne Acres, several others routinely patrol our city.  As noted earlier in the Police Chief’s report, another warrant, the fourth, has been issued for Herman Harris, who was previously convicted of stealing the car of Commissioner Nichols and trying to rob the Speedway Convenience Store.

In reference to citizens traveling through our city, Mayor Fore confirmed that he had written a letter on 4/10 to the Kentucky Transportation Department representative, Nancy Albright.  The letter deals with the condition of the fence along the I-64 exit ramp onto Hurstbourne Parkway that no longer restricts pedestrian traffic to pass from the Doral Apartments through our city to Taylorsville Road.  The emphasis was that this would inevitably lead to a serious injury or death.

Roads

Commissioner Nichols reported that she is in the process of obtaining an estimate for repaving the streets.  In other news, in an effort to save money for the city, Commissioner Nichols has purchased four light bulbs for $150 for the city entrance signs that we can replace ourselves.  In the past, we have paid ‘Outdoor Lighting’ over $230 to replace one light bulb.  The city can also save money by putting up our own signs, such as the ‘Block Watch’ signs.  Commissioner Nichols has ordered another Cardwell Way sign to replace the one that is missing.  More specific information was provided for the new phone purchased for the city as referenced in the Police Chief’s report.  Finally, a mailbox for the city will be purchased and installed by the backdoor.

OLD BUSINESS

Miscellaneous

The city-wide yard sale will be on 6/10/06 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

A resident at the meeting advised that there are still large branches lying in the park.  Commissioner Dunn will check and handle as needed.

In answer to an inquiry about the location of the police car, Police Chief Redman advised that it is being moved around within the city as a deterrent, as opposed to remaining parked on Hurstbourne Circle.

Finally, to address the problem with people turning left on a red light from the other side of Blowing Tree onto Taylorsville Road, the city has applied for a traffic grant to begin June or July.  This will pay for the city to write traffic tickets during overtime in conjunction with J-Town.

There being no further business or discussion, the regular meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Michael Bolten, City Clerk
