June 2009 Newsletter
City Safety Reminder
This is the time of year for gathering of family and friends. As we do so it means that more cars are parking on our streets. Please make sure that your guests are not blocking our city streets. Emergency vehicles require more room on the street than the average car. So when seconds count make sure that the emergency equipment can get down our city streets. Remember it might be you or your loved one that needs help.
TAX BILLS
It’s that time of year again: The 2009 tax bills will be mailed in a couple of weeks. If a mortgage company requests that your bill be sent to them for payment, that’s where it will be sent. The rest will be mailed to the address furnished by the Metro Property Valuation Administrator.
PARKS
The storm-damaged trees were finally cleaned up & removed. A new area with a mulch base & log rounds to sit or play on was created in the shade by the play area. Some additional planting around the brick storage building is planned.
There has been some vandalism & graffiti on the picnic tables again. Someone has defaced several tables in our wonderful park. Please report anyone damaging the park equipment to a Commissioner or our police chief. There will be cash rewards for arrest & conviction of these individuals.
STREETS & LIGHTS
The new street lights on Bunsen Parkway are brighter and more efficient. The dark street light on Cardwell Way has been reported to LG&E.
Sanitation Reminder
According to the folks at Rumpke, we need to contact their customer service department whenever your pick up has been skipped. Remember that we have two different crews who come through the neighborhood each pick up day. The first crew is either the recycle crew (Tuesdays) or the yard waste crew (Fridays). The truck for these services is always the first to come through the neighborhood, and many times that is very early in the morning. Later in the day the garbage truck will come through the neighborhood (both Tuesdays & Fridays). Many times we see the first truck come through the neighborhood and think that we have been skipped. Just take a look out the window to see if your neighbor’s trash cans are still at the curb and if they are then yours will also be picked up. But if that does not happen call 568-3800. Rumpke will have a truck out to pick up your skipped trash within 24 hours. There will be no delays in service over the July 4th holiday.

Police Commissioner
With Commissioner Dunn out of town, there was nothing to report beyond the Police Report already provided by Chief Redman.
Roads Commissioner
Commissioner Lynch advised that the street sign at Blowing Tree has been replaced and security measures installed.
In other news, there was a discussion about how best to repair the damage to the street on Cardwell Way, including the cost ($1500 to make a temporary repair, or $4820 for a more permanent fix). After the discussion, Commissioner Lynch made a motion to spend $4820 to repair as needed. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Hardin and passed without opposition.
A letter from the Nunnlea Beautification League was received by the city to once again request a donation to help clean out the ditch in front. Commissioner Lynch made a motion to donate $600, which was seconded by Commissioner Hardin and passed unopposed. Attorney Stewart suggested that the check for the clean-out be made out to the vendor who actually provides the service.
Parks Commissioner
Commissioner Hardin advised that more people are using the park. Three more trees have been planted. Of the 19 trees recently planted, all but two have survived. It was mentioned that the park is in good shape, and the Port-A-Let is back. The stumps left from the recent storm cleanup will be removed by next Thursday. The retention basin has been cleaned out.
Sanitation Commissioner
Commissioner Renninger reported that there were three garbage misses this past month, and one failed yard waste pickup on Haviland. She has been in contact with Michael Sweeten from Rumpke. Finally, a resident had e-mailed about backdoor service and was advised by Rumpke that any home with a rolling can cannot have back door service. It was also noted that backdoor service is not provided in the contract.
OLD BUSINESS
Miscellaneous
Mayor Fore advised that we have finally received the money from FEMA, which will be used to reimburse for the recent storm costs. Mayor Fore has met with the principal of Kennedy Metro School concerning the ongoing drainage problem for the residents next to the school on Cardwell. It was suggested that the city attorney may be asked to follow up with a letter to help resolve the continuing problem. The City has decided to take action itself and paint the “Do Not Block Intersection” indicators on Hurstbourne Parkway in front of Hurstbourne Circle. In answer to a question about the widening of Blowing Tree, Commissioner Hardin explained the informal survey of the residents along Blowing Tree and the intention to make this stretch of road safer.
