UPDATE ON PARK FOR 2008

This year as a busy year upgrading our city park.  These have been the most major changes since the park was dedicated in September, 1998.

The old sand in the children’s play area, 40 tons, was dirty with rocks and tree roots.  This was removed and replaced with 40 tons of new sand, washed with water, from southern Indiana.  The new sand is like sugar.

All of the playground equipment was power-washed and some repainted.  A new interlocked brick border was placed around the entire area.  A new see-saw is being added to the play area.  This turned out to be a big undertaking, but now it’s almost finished.

A new park sign will be installed soon.  I’m working with the Metro Government parks.  All of the old, dead brush was removed from the park sign and we found the sign eaten with termites.

Trees:     Twelve dead spruces were cut down and roots removed on the berm at Bunsen Way.  The 12 dead trees were replaced with 12 new trees.

All broken small trees, bushes and undergrowth were cut and removed from the berm area and the rear of Hurstbourne Circle joining the park area.

Approximately eight larger trees that were dead were cut down and roots removed from the park and at the end of Bristol Avenue.  We trimmed many other trees.

We planted 17 small flowering trees throughout the park.  A few may have died but they will be replaced this fall.  When planting the new trees we dug into an old building foundation or septic tank that was over 100 years old!

All the old dead bushes and undergrowth were removed from around the storage shed.  This building, as we can best figure out, was part of a 300-acre farm that included Nunnlea House.  All of this was built around 1855.  This is a big piece of history for our small city.

The park is a beautiful place to take your children and family.  All the tables were repaired and cleaned.  It’s a great place to play, relax, and picnic.

Enjoy!                                                                            Brent O. Hardin

Park Commissioner

From the “Nunnlea News”

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  The flower beds around the porches at Nunnlea need some TLC.  Some long arms are required to reach and remove the dead branches from the locust trees in the front yard.  Some “fall touch-ups” will produce a prettier spring at Nunnlea!  THANKS!
