October 2006 Newsletter

LEAVES       As you may have noticed, not a lot of leaves have fallen, thus far…  I can’t begin to schedule leaf pickups until the majority of leaves have fallen, as it isn’t cost- effective for Stump Busters or the City to schedule a leaf pickup for 4 or 5 yards.  As soon as more leaves have fallen, leaf pickups will be scheduled and dates placed in the Newsletter!  Thanks for your patience.

Police Chief

Police Chief Redman reported on the following:

--From 8/11 to 9/14, there was a total of 330 coverage hours,

            --2 criminal mischiefs, 1 theft,

            --280 public & police contacts,

            --3 traffic stops,

            --2 house checks,

            --9 calls about suspicious persons,

            --9 motorist assists,

            --3 investigations,

--Met with Taylorhurst representatives regarding recent vandalism and stepped up the patrols.  Mayor Fore, along with Chief Redman and Officer Cook, will meet with Metro police to request assistance with the patrols,

--Speedway has installed high resolution cameras,

--1530 miles on the police cruiser,

--Still waiting for Homeland Security to contact the city with packets before having another Block Watch meeting.  Mayor Fore instructed Police Chief Redman to have a Block Watch meeting within the next month,

--To reduce the number of vehicles that cut through Taylorhurst Shopping Center from Hurstbourne Parkway to Taylorsville Road, Mayor Fore has requested that this be patrolled.

Attorney’s Report

Attorney Emery reported that there is an ongoing issue regarding the removal of some trees and hedges along the wall on Hurstbourne Lane.  Mayor Fore advised that some persons were using the hedges to hide behind at night while smoking dope.  Hagan Properties promised that they would re-landscape on both sides of the wall.  Mayor Fore will follow-up with a letter requesting a copy of the landscaping plans.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Parks

Commissioner Dunn provided some additional details of the upcoming picnic.  The classic fire truck will be there at 2:00 pm, with the parade at 2:30 pm.  Norris Place Ice-Cream will be the new ice-cream vendor.  Four electrical lines will be utilized for the picnic.  The picnic tables have been sealed and repaired.  The band from last year will perform.  There will be 3 tents and 2 slides which will require supervision by the parents of those using the slides.  Kingsley Barbecue will provide the food, served between 4:00 & 5:30.  Everyone should bring a chair and each family should bring a dessert for six people.  There will also be a radio-controlled airplane demonstration.  Concerning the door prizes this year, the address for each residence in the City will be placed in a bucket from which the names will be drawn.  A family member must be present to win.  It was noted that the drainage ditch will be cleaned out and the grass cut prior to the picnic.

Sanitation

Commissioner Heck reported that there was one missed garbage pickup for a resident, one missed yard waste pickup, and one dumpster delivered.

Police

Commissioner Hardin noted that he maintains contact with the city police officers every day.  He also reiterated the need, as mentioned in last month’s meeting by a city resident, to install a “No Right Turn on Red’ sign at the corner of Bunsen Way and Hurstbourne Parkway.  Finally, he confirmed the need for a Block Watch meeting and mentioned the vandalism (windows had been shot out) to some businesses at Taylorhurst.

Roads

Commissioner Nichols reported that the representative from LG&E was unable to attend tonight but has been invited to attend next month.  It was mentioned that an e-mail to LG&E had been sent regarding the need to paint some of the light posts.  Commissioner Nichols was advised that due to personnel restrictions, it would not be their responsibility.  However, information received prior suggested that LG&E did accept responsibility.  The issue has not yet been resolved.

In other news, street signs have been ordered for Blowing Tree and Cardwell Way.  Regarding the bus stop at the corner of Taylorsville Rd and Hurstbourne Lane, it was suggested that it be moved.  People have been discarding trash on the ground and sitting/lying on the grass, and it is located within 200 yards of another bus stop.  However, Commissioner Nichols pointed out that Hurstbourne Acres has no control over where TARC chooses to put a bus stop, and the easement on which the bus stop is located is not on city property.  A resident then suggested that a shelter might help alleviate some of the littering and make it look more presentable.  Related to this issue, Commissioner Heck was asked to contact Rumpke about emptying the garbage can there and in the park.  It was also mentioned that the culvert at the walk-through from Hurstbourne Lane and Taylorhurst Shopping Center was in poor condition and a potentially dangerous situation.  MSD will be contacted.

OLD BUSINESS

Park Pavilion

The discussion about the construction of a pavilion in the park was tabled until after the picnic.

There being no further business or discussion, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Michael Bolten, City Clerk
